Hi my name is Dr. Sahar Khoshakhlagh, Psy.D, MA, LMFT (Dr. K or Dr. Sahar). I’m a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist with a private practice in the Chelsea/Flatiron District of New York City. I have over 15 years of experience in behavioral health services.
I work with individuals, couples, and families struggling with a variety of challenges and I am passionate about working with members of the LGBTQIA community, especially in relation to identity development.
I am relational and supportive and utilize an eclectic system’s approach, including mindfulness, trauma informed care, attachment and emotion focused therapy to address a merit of challenges. Including, anxiety, communication problems, relationship and family problems, intimacy issues, identity development, and more.
I focus on enhancing my client’s strength by helping clients get in touch with who they are and by identifying what they want out of life. When working with couples, I help each partner learn to build compassion for the other’s journey. My practice is open to all couples, including those in polyamory and non-monogamous relationships.
Your sense of self is derived from your day to day events, history, culture, education, and your parents. This is done through the activation of your biological sensory system. Once data is taken in through your senses and processed by your mind, your thoughts produce an array of emotions which eventuate your experience and ultimately produce your truth about life. If you are not aware of your belief system, your thoughts and emotions will wear you down like an app depleting the battery life of your smartphone when gone unchecked.
Hence, with a background in systems theory, I discovered the power to change the patterns of our story line by paying attention to the details of our system. The gift of presence and the freedom to choose is what I desire to give to you. I do this by using your feelings as an important process towards self-awareness because feelings become the clue to your thoughts, behaviors, and belief systems.
I do not instruct you with an alternate interpretation of feelings; rather, I ask process questions to increase your higher thinking skills. For instance, I will ask you how you observe your pain rather than how you feel or think about your pain. My goal is always the same regardless of symptom, religion, culture or gender.
As a systems therapist this is liberating because it allows me to meet you where you are at. I listen, ask process questions, validate your experience, and provide compassionate care so you can pass the barriers that hold you back from trusting yourself. My goal is to increase your degree of self-differentiation and enhance the quality of your relational systems. I do this by helping you understand your cycles and patterns and by empowering you to ask for what you want.
When working with couples, I help each partner learn to build understanding for the other’s journey. Desmond Tutu described this human connection best when he said, “a person is a person through other people.” Hence, intention, effective communication, and commitment towards your vision becomes the foundation of our work together.
As a result, my mission is to provide you with quality emotional and mental health services so you can get closer to your objectives. My intent is to support you, not on an individual basis, but rather as a person in the context of your relationships because healing takes place within relational systems; including your therapeutic relationship with me.
I look forward to meet you.
