Robert Schuh

Counselor - LPC

Greetings!

Introduction and Background

My name is Robert Schuh. I have been in the Mental Health Field since 2001. My educational background consists of a BA in Social Work from UW-Whitewater, an MA in Community Counseling from Lakeland College Madison, WI Campus, and I am currently enrolled in a Doctoral Level Clinical Psychology program through the International School of Psychology Professionals at Argosy Schuamburg, Il Campus.

I am currently writing my dissertation with the working title:
“Prevention of Adverse Health Outcomes in Vulnerable Youth: Emphasis on Programs That Foster Social Inclusion and Build Resiliency Skills”

I am highly active in the community and work with multiple community agencies to affect positive social change. I have presented on multiple community panels through Community Action, Diversity Action Team of Rock County, YWCA, and Yellow Brick Road Organization. I have presented to classes at Blackhawk Techinical College and Rock University High School. I am a co-founder and executive board member of Yellow Brick Road Organization. I also work with Youth2Youth, a program dedicated to reducing use of substances among young adult populations.

Therapeutic Process

The foundation of my therapeutic process is a very genuine, non-judgmental, and unconditional acceptance of the person. This establishes the working alliance between therapist and client. My therapeutic style is based around multiple theoretical approaches with which I integrate current research. I work with clients to offer an effective and personalized approach to therapy.

Specialities

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)

ADHD is one of the most researched disorders in existance. There are thousands of peer reviewed studies around ADHD. One such study involved 10,000 participants, this is virtually unheard of in the research world! The reality is that ADHD is an extremely pervasive neuro-developmental disorder. It is NOT a made up disorder to “push pills” by pharmaceutical companies. The single most effective intervention is medication, which treats roughly 60% of the presenting symptoms. This is true IF you choose only one intervention! My reccomendation is don’t use just one intervention.

I provide a whole systems approach to treat multiple aspects of ADHD. I begin treatment from a comprehensive approach which may or may not include medication. If medication is a chosen treatment option, I have a good working relationship with an excellent, local medical doctor to coordinate your treatment. This insures the highest quality of care and fastest symptom relief. In cases where both medication and my comprehensive approach are used together, clients typically report greater long term symptom relief than either approach alone.

I chose to specialize in ADHD due to my own personal experiences receiving ineffective and substandard care. Growing up with ADHD, I know first hand the struggles ADHD individuals face on a day to day basis. I grew increasingly disappointed with the severe lack of education around ADHD in the vast majority of Graduate and Doctoral level programs. My approach to ADHD treatment is heaviliy influenced by current research around the disorder and those who live with it. Give my office a call or send us an email through www.attentivecs.com if you are an individual with ADHD who is seeking effective, evidence based treatment interventions from someone who actually “gets it”. I will take the time to explain the actual disorder and will help you separate out your genuine self from the ADHD. Due to the persvasive impact of ADHD, I also work with partners, children, and families of clients living with ADHD. When working with school age clients, I also offer to work with the school to ensure coordination of care.

Additionally, I also provide quarterly presentations which offer the community educational opportunities around ADHD.

Sexual Orientation and Gender

Orientation and Gender are highly complex factors dependent upon a variety of biological, hormonal, environmental (while in utero), and genetic factors. An individual may choose to engage in various behaviors with various people; however, an individuals orientation and gender are NOT choices but a direct result of multiple factors.

Transgender Individuals

Transgender individuals have specific and unique treament needs. As one of the most highly discriminated against groups, they experience riddiculously high levels of Minority Stress on a daily basis. If you are looking for an accepting therapist who understands your unique needs, then please call. I have already done the research and you will not need to teach me. This is signifcant because many therapists learn about Transgender clients from their clients. It is NOT your responsibility to educate your therapist!

I strongly believe it is my personal responsiblilty to stay as current as is possible within all areas I identify as a speciality. Along those lines I dedicate a minimum of 5 hours of reading and analyzing current research around ADHD and LGBT populations.
