Why choose Art Therapy? Some things can be difficult to put into words. Art bypasses language. It taps into a much deeper part of our selves. If you are looking to explore your inner world in a way that words do not fully describe, Art Therapy may be right for you.
Creating artwork can help you navigate through challenging circumstances. Through the pre-verbal language of Art you may find that you are able to make sense of things that have at times felt overwhelming. We can make art to process difficult emotions. For instance, have you ever felt the exact texture of an emotion? What color is that emotion? Does it have a particular size and shape? Art Therapy sessions can give your feelings shape, color, texture, and form.
Following a consultation you’ll be sent a simple short list of art supplies prior to the first session. This list will include everything you will need for creating basic art projects.
Sessions will last an hour, and we’ll meet virtually via video calls. In the beginning the first Art Therapy session will be about establishing what you would like to work on. After this first session, session time will be devoted to talking through the themes and subject matter that arise in our work together. Art Therapy sessions provide a safe space for any and all subjects to be explored. There is nothing that is too taboo to be expressed within the session. An Art Therapy project may span several sessions or even months. It all depends on what needs to be expressed.
My approach to making art with clients is mindfulness-based and process-oriented. In Art Therapy sessions we focus on process over product. This means we won’t concern ourselves with how beautiful the finished art project will look, but rather we use time in session together to dive into the artistic process. This is the major distinction between a session and an art class. What matters most here is the making, how it feels in your body to make art.
I will be there alongside you each step of the way, supporting you in your process of self-discovery. Together we can create art projects that will free your inner creative voice!
