Michaia Walker
Clinical Social Worker/Therapist -
“Be easy. take your time. you are coming home to yourself”- Nayyirah WaheedI find this quote matches my approach as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) in New York. I like to bring a culturally and identity affirming, trauma informed lens to my work with clients. As a socially conscious BIPOC (Black, Indigenous or Person of Color), I take deliberate care to recognize, respect and celebrate all of the identities of my clients. By slowing down, we are able to find and care for the parts of ourselves that are often hidden, ignored, and might even be hurting the most.I see therapy as a collaborative process between myself and the client. Neither of us are doing the work alone. I use my formal MSW education from University of Pennsylvania as well as personal life experience and tools I have gathered during my years of direct practice to serve various populations. I have experience with survivors of childhood trauma, survivors of domestic violence and survivors of sexual assault. Also clients living with anxiety, depression and other mood disorders. I’m fluent in ASL and have experience working with Deaf and Hard of Hearing children and adults. I often use Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT), since I am certified in this modality. However, I always try to meet each individual at their own comfort level.
