Dr. Mary Collins
Psychologist -
“Comhar” is Irish for collaboration or partnership. In therapy, I work together with my clients to help them deal with change and transition.
I view therapy as a collaborative, yet challenging effort between those persons in the room, and believe it is this therapeutic relationship that allows people the space to grow to their potential, try new ways of thinking and interacting, and make lasting changes in their lives. My non-judgmental, interactive, and interpersonal approach can help break through the conflict with yourself so that you can participate more fully in life and discover the possibilities within you. We will work together towards your personal, individual growth.
How can therapy help? Change is an inevitable part of life. Sometimes we choose to make changes in our lives, and other times change is thrust upon us, forcing us to deal with the aftermath. Many people make a bold and courageous choice to leave a relationship or job. Others are left with the shock of being left by a partner, being fired from a job, or having a loved one die. Family changes, relocations, education choices, and daily decisions; no matter the circumstances, whether through our own choosing or happening to us, change can be difficult.
The process of change often leaves people feeling anxious, angry, sad, stuck, or even frozen. Balancing mixed emotions can feel confusing or overwhelming. So, in reaction, we often try to control or manage change, which can lead to even more symptoms of distress. Many people are surprised to learn that the process of dealing with change is similar to the process of grieving.
We all face changes in our lives. Though times of transition, or moves from one space to another, may be exciting, they can also feel very lonely. Having someone with us on our journeys can make an incredible difference. The exciting part is that through learning to deal with change in a healthy way, there is opportunity to deepen your understanding of yourself and discover satisfying ways to live in the next chapter of your life. Choosing to begin and engage in therapy is a brave way to start creating and living the life you want.
