Kirk Shelton
Counselor - LPC
I practice from a strengths-based approach. I emphasize resilience, self-leadership, and compassion. The familiar ways of dealing with life’s challenges may no longer be working, but together we can tap into your natural ability to adapt and change.
I take a Rogerian perspective, which prizes the alliance between counselor and client. I empower clients toward meaningful change by maintaining a powerful space of unconditional acceptance and invitation. I endeavor to place you in the driver’s seat, as only you can navigate to the heart of the matter, and that often requires an honest, open context along with someone who cares and is willing to learn from you. Therapy sometimes requires Cognitive-Behavioral techniques, but always communication. You learn and grow as you work to express your experience, and you take that with you.
I offer EMDR, a versatile approach proven effective for a wide variety of symptoms that have clients feeling stuck, including through telehealth. I also make frequent use of Cognitive-Behavioral techniques. Honest communication in conversation to solve problems is the key, as a healthy therapeutic relationship is essential regardless of techniques used.
