Life can be hard. There are times when all of us truly need help and support to navigate difficult challenges. When you’re struggling, I know you want to feel better and to get back on track as soon as possible. No one chooses to struggle, and seeking help is often the smartest choice. That’s why my approach to counseling is client-centered and solution-focused.
Therapy sessions are a place to find support and a safe context to express your thoughts and feelings freely, as well as to learn to navigate your innermost concerns and desires. The most powerful thing you can bring to therapy is yourself, and in return, you can expect me to be real with you while I strive to provide the best care possible. In addition to having 30 plus years of experience with social work in schools, adoption agencies, Christian programs and geriatric care, a great deal of life experience informs my approach to therapy. I’ve adopted a child from foster care, changed careers, had to cope with a chronic medical diagnosis and have had my faith tested through a variety of challenges. The techniques I draw upon in my private practice have guided me through some very trying times, and I believe they can guide you as well.
Although everyone struggles at times, we all handle conflict differently. Insomuch, I will seek to understand what you want and need in the context of your work, relationships and lifestyle. It’s common in the midst of everyday life for your true desires to be suppressed or replaced by the need to accommodate the wishes of others. However, in a safe, therapeutic environment with compassionate support you can begin to let go of that façade and begin to truly live. I believe that living according to your values and pursuing your true passions allows the greatest ability to thrive and be happy. Together, at a pace that feels comfortable for you, we’ll explore your identity, values and passions and develop specific ways to help you reach your goals. I also believe the ability to relate is formed early on in life and modeled by attachments to significant people. Exploring those attachments can be a powerful process in our evaluation of how certain emotions and beliefs keep you feeling stuck. Looking objectively at your thoughts and emotions can help you make decisions about whether specific thoughts and ongoing feelings are helping or hindering your wellbeing. We may also explore your support system. A vibrant support system is a significant factor in healing and growth. Developing and maintaining a strong support system will enable you to utilize your inherent resilience and strength. By the end of our work together, my goal is for you to be able to feel strong in the places that felt weak, and confident and hopeful in your ability to foster loving and healthy relationships with yourself and others. Through the therapeutic process, you will increase your self-awareness and learn new tools to effectively navigate challenges as they come up again in the future.
