Daniel Minuchin
Marriage & Family Therapist - LMFT
As a family therapist I tend to focus on what is happening in people’s lives now, and on the patterns in families and how those patterns impact on individuals. People are often focused on problems they are having, and therapy often focuses on those problems. I try to be attentive to the strengths and resources that individuals and families have. I am also interested in cognitive patterns, the way we tend to think about things and how that effects us.
In working with children, I think that families have more impact on children than therapists do. I think working with the family is the most effective way to help children, and usually the most effective treatment for adolescents.
In working with couples, I am more attentive to the patterns of interaction, and less to the specific issues couples come in with. I help couples look at their different backgrounds and the often unacknowledged differences in how they see things which can lead to misunderstandings and conflict.
I am also a hypnotherapist. Generally I use hypnotherapy in working with anxiety issues (phobias, panic attacks, social anxiety, general anxiety) and also with depression. Usually I use hypnotherapy in combination with other more traditional therapeutic modalities.
